The Healing Journey of Vietnam Veterans
As the sun rises over Oshkosh, Wisconsin, 100 Vietnam War veterans embark on a meaningful journey to Washington, D.C., aboard the annual Yellow Ribbon Honor Flight. This flight, initiated by the Old Glory Honor Flight organization in 2013, is not just a travel experience; it is a powerful act of healing. For these veterans, it offers a chance to reflect and remember their comrades who paid the ultimate price for their country during a tumultuous time.
A Long Overdue Welcome Home
The Yellow Ribbon Honor Flight seeks to provide these veterans with the warmth and recognition they did not receive upon their return from the Vietnam War. “We wanted to highlight a group of vets who deserved the recognition and to give them a welcome home that they never had,” says Diane MacDonald, the executive director of Old Glory Honor Flight. This flight represents the 11th annual pilgrimage for Vietnam veterans and has carried almost 11,000 vets since its inception.
Experiencing History Firsthand
On their visit, the veterans have the opportunity to pay their respects at significant historical sites, including the poignant Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. At the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, they can delve into the Price of Freedom exhibit, revealing the sacrifices made for American liberty. This trip serves not only as a remembrance but also as an educational experience, bridging generations and fostering understanding.
The Emotional Return
After a day filled with remembrance, the sentiments shift during the return flight. Veterans participate in a special mail call, receiving letters from family, friends, and even strangers expressing gratitude for their service. These moments of connection bring forth tears, silence, and sometimes laughter, as men and women bond over shared experiences and emotions. As the Airbus A321 lands back in Oshkosh, the veterans are met with a heartfelt water salute from local fire trucks, a tribute that signifies their journey's importance.
A Community that Cares
When the aircraft arrives, it’s all but quiet for a few moments. Only when the veterans look towards the crowd waiting to greet them do they realize the magnitude of their welcome home. Thousands of EAAers, representing the flying community, line the plaza, cheering, waving flags, and arms wide open. “It takes your breath away because there are so many people,” one veteran might reflect, overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and recognition.

As AirVenture 2025 unfolds, everyone is invited to head to Boeing Plaza around 6:15 p.m. to celebrate the return of these veterans. This celebration serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of community, appreciation for our veterans, and the role we can all play in giving thanks to those who served.
