Discovering My Passion for Flight
At just 18 years old, I never imagined aviation would become a significant part of my life. However, my journey took flight when I joined the 170 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in 2019, a decision that turned a mere interest into a full-blown passion. It was here, amidst training and mentorship, that I was inspired to pursue my private pilot license.
The pivotal moment occurred during my first familiarization flight in a Cessna 172 at St. Andrews, a flight that equipped me with both thrill and perspective. As I soared above my hometown, the prospect of becoming a pilot crystallized in my mind. For many, the road to flying is daunting; however, programs like the Ray Aviation Scholarship pave the way for aspiring aviators like me.
The Ray Aviation Scholarship: A Life-Changing Opportunity
Receiving the Ray Aviation Scholarship felt surreal—an opportunity to receive $10,000 towards my flight training. I learned about this program through networking, as my dad connected with the father of a previous recipient. Despite the looming deadline, I fearlessly submitted my application with the encouragement of my parents. Their words, “What do you have to lose?” resonated deeply and pushed me to take a chance. Winning the scholarship has truly changed my life trajectory.
From Classroom to Cockpit
My academic journey through the Aviation Ground School Diploma Program at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate was equally crucial. Completing eight aviation-related courses with a focus on safety and teamwork honed my foundational knowledge. Every lecture and flight simulation prepared me for the realities of piloting. As I trained at Harv’s Air, taking my first solo flight and earning ratings for night flying and VFR over-the-top, I was continuously reminded of the immense support from the EAA community behind me.
The Power of Mentorship in Aviation
The role of mentorship cannot be overstated. Programs like the Ray Aviation Scholarship not only provide financial assistance but also empower young pilots through guidance and connection. Many previous scholarship winners, like Rosie Rivera, have gone on to achieve great heights in aviation, signaling that the support systems in place are vital for the success of youth. Their journeys inspire newcomers and reflect the ongoing commitment within aviation communities to uplift and teach.
Future Aspirations: Taking Flight
Now a first-year student at Providence University, I am diving into a four-year aviation degree with an added business minor. My aspirations extend beyond mere flying; I envision a career where I can integrate business acumen with aviation skills. Working part-time as a ramp agent at Perimeter Aviation, I gain real-world experience that complements my education, all while building toward my goal of becoming a commercial pilot.
