A Legacy in the Skies: Honoring Tom Ewing
Tom Ewing, an EAA volunteer and aviation aficionado, has a life story that intertwines deeply with aviation history. Born into a family steeped in military aviation, Tom’s enthusiasm for the sky was ignited early on. His grandfather’s role as a Curtiss Jenny instructor pilot in World War I, coupled with his uncle’s service as a commanding officer during World War II, set the stage for a lifelong passion that saw him become a pilot at a young age.
The UPS Journey: Building a Legacy
By 1981, Tom was part of a groundbreaking team that laid the foundations for what would become UPS Airlines, one of the largest cargo carriers in the world. At just 23, he earned his Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate and began a career that would span over three decades. The transition from a small group of twelve dedicated individuals to a global airline shaped his experience and solidified his legacy in aviation.
Continuing the Mission: Volunteerism at EAA
Retiring in 2015 from UPS didn’t signify the end of Tom's aviation journey. His intrinsic motivation to connect with aviation history led him to volunteer with the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), where he actively contributes to the Living History Flight Experience (LHFE) program. Flying the legendary B-17 Aluminum Overcast and B-25 Berlin Express, Tom helps educate the public about the contributions of World War II veterans. “It’s not about superhuman abilities but about inspiring others,” he remarked, advocating for the preservation of these significant wartime narratives.
Touching Lives: Personal Connections to Aviation History
For Tom, each flight carries a profound emotional significance. Veterans' families often express their gratitude by bringing cherished artifacts, such as urns or flags, on board, bridging generations through shared experiences. “Those moments are deeply moving and serve a larger purpose,” he reflects, highlighting his motive to preserve the legacies of those who served. Through these aircraft, Tom connects people with history, ensuring that the stories of these brave individuals are not forgotten.
Developing New Generations: A Personal Commitment to Training
Recognizing the necessity of transferring knowledge, Tom developed a comprehensive training program for the B-25 pilots, complete with instructional videos. This initiative reflects his belief that passing down aviation history is as critical as flying the planes themselves. “It’s about inspiring new enthusiasts to embrace this history and carry it forward,” he said, advocating for continued engagement in aviation among younger generations.
Volunteers: The Heart of EAA
As Tom’s story illustrates, volunteers are the backbone of the EAA, transforming dreams into reality at events like the AirVenture Oshkosh. Each volunteer, like Tom, plays a crucial role in the fabric of the aviation community, contributing to an environment where history, education, and passion converge. So, next time you meet a volunteer at AirVenture or elsewhere, take a moment to express your thanks—their dedication enhances the experiences of many.
